Speonk
Speonk is a tranquil hamlet in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, situated on Long Island’s South Fork. The name “Speonk” is derived from a Native American word meaning “high place,” reflecting the area’s elevated terrain. Established around 1740, early settlers engaged in farming and livestock raising, with duck farming becoming prominent in the 1880s. The community’s development was further influenced by the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in the 1870s, which facilitated transportation and commerce. Today, Speonk maintains a rural charm, offering a peaceful residential environment with access to nearby beaches and recreational areas.
